Case Studies

DateNameSummary
12/19/2011 Texas & Southwestern The Texas & Southwestern is a small N-Scale model railroad that features a Zephyr. The case study is broken down into several sections which detail the various facets of the construction and operation of this railroad.
12/19/2011 PUTRA Kelana Jaya Rail Line PUTRA (Projek Usahasama Transit Ringen Automatik), now called the Kelana Jaya Rail Line, is the third rapid transit line built in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. PUTRA decided to have a model built as a simulation of part of their system to: 1. simulate their operating practices 2. train their operators in the many aspects of manual operation 3. train their supervisors 4. simulate various emergency situations. The model was built in nine 78 inch by 36 inch sections. Construction and testing was done in the USA, then the model was crated and shipped to Kuala Lumpur.
03/05/2012 The Interstate Railroad Dorchester & Dixiana Branch The Interstate Railroad Dorchester & Dixiana Branch is a medium-sized HO-scale layout designed to capture Appalachian coal-hauling operations in southwestern Virginia in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The layout (still under construction) was designed with a human factors engineer’s eye for intuitive operation which greatly affected which DCC components were chosen and how they are employed.
09/01/2011 Nemo Junction The world is filled with places like Nemo Junction, a crossing between two railroads which is protected by a signal interlocking plant that also serves as an interchange point between these railroads.
06/15/2012 Brandywine & Benedictine The Brandywine and Benedictine Railroad (B&B) is an Appalachian coal hauling railroad set in the mid 1950s. The layout is HO scale, it was owned and built by Norm Stenzel. This case study was originally presented as part of the “Digitrax Big Book of DCC” and it has been reproduced here from that text. This study was originally presented as part of three chapters about DCC Installation based on different layouts. The other layouts discussed were the Sante Fe & Western and the Norcross Southern. It is recommended that you read these studies as well as some of the topics overlap.
06/13/2012 Norcross Southern The Norcross Southern was a medium sized N-Scale demonstration layout. It was built in the conference room at the old Digitrax production facility, and has since been dismantled. This case study was originally presented as part of the “Digitrax Big Book of DCC” and it has been reproduced here from that text. This study was originally presented as part of three chapters about DCC Installation based on different layouts. The other layouts discussed were the Sante Fe & Western and the Brandywine & Benedictine. It is recommended that you read these studies as well as some of the topics overlap.
06/14/2012 Santa Fe & Western The Santa Fe & Western is a small simple “out and back” track plan with a small yard. It has a continuous run mainline with two passing sidings allowing you to simulate a great deal of prototype operation. This Case Study concentrates on how to convert this layout from traditional DC to DCC operations. Please note, this case study was originally presented as part of the “Digitrax Big Book of DCC” and it has been reproduced here from that text.
