Shielded otr Unshielded Twisted Pair like cat5/6 is not recommended for LocoNet. This kind of cable can causes problems due to capacitive load.
These issues were observed during the National N Scale Convention in Louisville, KY on a large layout using Twisted Pair cables. The issues were resolved when the cables were replaced.
