LOCONET Personal Use Edition.

Disclaimer and Rules for Use of LocoNet Personal Use Edition

We often have requests from individual Digitrax users who have technical capabilities who wish to make their own non-commercial devices to connect to LocoNet.

John Kabat has kindly provided freeware TSR drivers that allow users to hook PC's to LocoNet. His API documentation saves the user from dealing with the exacting requirements of developing reliable network drivers. Visit John's web site (http://sljkrr.home.mindspring.com) for more information.

For others who want fundamental network access for hardware implementations, we provide this information for personal use and experimentation. This information is provided solely for non-commercial private usage and conveys no rights to use this copyrighted information for commercial usage. If you do not agree to these terms then do not download this information. Downloading of this material means you agree to abide by the conditions stated here. If you wish to advance from personal usage to a commercial product please contact Digitrax to be considered for the LocoNet Developer's program.

The Personal Use version of LocoNet is for the Long Distance version of the protocol. This has been optimized to allow a very long network lengths in a free-form wiring environment. Avoid the temptation to "speed up", modify or "improve" the protocol beyond that defined here. There are numerous future extensions that are under evaluation, including a high speed burst mode for PC-PC data transfer in a segmented arrangement, and numerous expansion op codes and messages.

Due to the demanding nature of building reliable network devices, Digitrax cannot support personal users in the development and debugging of their software and hardware. Dr. Hansreudi Tanner, of Tannersoft (developer of the LocoNet certified "Winlok") has kindly agreed to host a LocoNet SIG for non-commercial users on his web site (http://www.digitoys-systems.com). Please note that Digitrax will not be able to answer e-mail, faxes or phone calls concerning personal use of LocoNet devices due to time pressures on our engineering staff.

We encourage users to make their own non-commercial LocoNet devices and add them to their own layouts, modules or even their local railroad club layout. If you call Digitrax tech support with LocoNet issues be sure to inform us if there are any attached devices that have not been tested by Digitrax to work on LocoNet. If you have problems, be sure to disconnect any non-Certified LocoNet devices to help in debugging.
