Digitrax DCS51 (Zephyr Xtra)

Operating Instructions

Selecting a locomotive or consist

1.         Press the “LOCO” key (display will flash)

2.         Enter the address of the locomotive or consist

            - For a consist, the address will normally be the lead locomotive

            - For a 3-digit locomotive number, use “0” for the first digit

3.         Press the “LOCO” key again (display will stop blinking)

4.         Move the direction selector on the throttle to either “Forward” or “Reverse”

5.         Move the speed knob until train moves

 

Dispatching (releasing) a locomotive or consist

1.         Move the direction selector on the throttle to the “BRAKE” position (middle)

2.         Press the “LOCO” key

3.         Press the “EXIT” key

 

Stealing a locomotive or consist

1.         Press the “LOCO” key (display will flash)

2.         Enter the address of the locomotive or consist

3.         Press the “LOCO” key again (display will flash “StLo”)

4.         Press the “LOCO” key a third time

            NOTE: 2 throttles are now controlling the train; determine which throttle should be running it and dispatch the locomotive from the other throttle

 

Building an MU consist

1.         Ensure both locomotives are traveling the same direction while independent

2.         Acquire the locomotive to be the “master” (normally lead loco, but a sound equipped loco should be master if available—see “Acquiring a locomotive or consist”)

3.         Press the “MU” key (a blinking dot will appear under “MU” in the window)

4.         Enter the address of the “slave” locomotive

5.         Press the “t +” key (address will revert to master)

6.         Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary to add additional units

 

Breaking an MU consist

1.         Press the “LOCO” key

2.         Enter the address of the locomotive to be dropped

3.         Press the “LOCO” key again

4.         Press the “MU” key (the dot under “MU” will blink)

5.         Press the “c –“ key

DCS51 Messages

oooo            Short circuit shutdown

-br-               DCS51 is set up as a booster

-cS-              DCS51 is powering up as the command station

cccc             Current overload (too many locomotives in power district)

dir                DCS51 is in programming mode (press “EXIT” key)

d nd             Open circuit on programming track (programming mode)

d nA             No acknowledgement from decoder (programming mode)

d nr              Not able to read decoder (programming mode)

Er L              MU could not be set up (address already part of an MU or another throttle)

FuLL             All 20 locomotive slots are full

HHHH           Input overvoltage (unplug DCS51 from transformer)

LLLL             Loss of carrier (no command station seen on Loconet)

Loco             DCS51 is operational and has no locomotive assigned

OPS             DCS51 is in operations programming mode (press “EXIT” key)

oooo            Short circuit shutdown

PAgE           DCS51 is in programming mode (press “EXIT” key)

PHyS            DCS51 is in programming mode (press “EXIT” key)

PoXX           DCS51 is powering off, XX displays current firmware version

-SLP             DCS51 detects another command station and is not set up as a booster

StLo             Selected a loco assigned to another throttle (press “LOCO” key to steal)
